January 1, 2025, Author Notes Series: Frequencies

This week's note pertains to a short story that I wrote for Kevin Kennedy's Horror Collection: Lost Edition.

Frequencies is a horrific short story that my youngest daughter gave me the basic idea for. I let it marinate in my head for a bit before I had the full plotline. Then I sat down to write it. I’ve done several stories for Kevin Kennedy’s Horror Collection volumes, and I’m pleased to say that each one has been wildly different.

Frequencies is centered on a man that was born mute. He can hear. He loves sound, loves music, but he simply cannot utter a sound. He’s great working with mechanical things, always taking things apart and seeing how they work, then putting them back together, usually working better than they had before. Despite this gift, he grows up isolated, lonely and resentful of the world around him. Sound becomes his life, frequencies of sound, feeling the vibrations in his bones.

While I did have a general storyline in mind, even I was surprised by how this one ended up. It’s dark and disturbing and in my opinion, bone-chilling. Check out the story in the Horror Collection: Lost Edition at the link below and let me know what you think of it in the comments.
